A few notes on the prints:

47. 50. 51.52. The Seasons Collection: Seasonal natural history mixed in with apt quotations from English literature.

53. Shakespeare’s Garden, is based on flowery quotations from Shakespearian text, woven around a knot garden similar to that at New Place, Stratford upon Avon,  and before it’s recent restoration.

54. Jane Austen’s Garden, is full of  lovely flowers found in Jane’s garden at Chawton, Hampshire. I once lived  near to it. There is a hint of Celia, the wonderful head gardener, and I’ve also included a mention of my favourite tearoom! (The geese sadly are NOT present now- but did wander around the orchard when Jane lived at the house).

55. Gilbert White’s Garden is somewhere very special to me. For a couple of years I was artist in residence at the Wakes, Selborne, which was Gilbert’s home for most of his life. It was here he wrote “The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne”, a book not out of print since 1789. It’s wonderful! The house and garden are full of atmosphere and sense of time.

61. Fast Beat my Heart started life as a commission for a CD cover of an anthology of Edward Thomas’s poems and essays compiled and edited by Chris Brown. Edward Thomas lived at Steep in Hampshire for the latter part of his life, following the First World War. Unlike many war poets, he is mostly  known for writing of memories of home, rather than the battlefield. The quotes I’ve used are in poems that Chris chose as particularly appropriate and loved.
